Greatest Art Mysteries in History
We will be exploring some of the world's greatest art mysteries, from forged masterpieces to incredible true stories.
Who painted the 'The Mona Lisa'? One of the most iconic paintings in history, The Mona Lisa has been an object of fascination for centuries. The painting is believed to have been painted by Leonardo da Vinci sometime between 1503-1506 and is currently housed in the Louvre Museum in Paris. But recently there have been questions raised about its authenticity, as researchers believe that it may not have actually been painted by Leonardo himself, but instead by someone else during the same period. Next up is another mysterious painting - 'The Portrait of Doctor Gachet'. Painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1890, this portrait has also raised questions regarding its authenticity. It is believed that while van Gogh did create a version of the painting, a later version created by a different artist may exist as well. This could explain why there are slight differences between various versions of the painting found around the world today. Moving on to another well-known artwork - 'Girl with a Pearl Earring'. Often attributed to Dutch master Johannes Vermeer, there is some dispute over whether he was actually responsible for creating this iconic piece or if it was painted by one of his contemporaries at a similar time period. There is no definitive answer as yet and further research needs to be done to determine who actually painted it.The Yves Chaudron Scandal: In 2009, one of Yves Chaudron’s most famous works, “La Prose du Transsibérien et de la Petite Jehanne de France” was revealed as a forgery. Despite being touted as authentic by multiple renowned art experts, it was later determined to be a fake due to the use of anachronistic paints and materials
Finally we come to 'The Little Street'. Also thought to be by Vermeer, this piece was actually discovered quite recently when it turned up at an auction house in 2004. Since then experts have questioned its authenticity due to discrepancies in technique and materials used compared to other works attributed to Vermeer. To date no one knows for certain who created this work and its authorship remains a mystery.
The Potato Eaters Controversy: It is believed that a version of Vincent Van Gogh's famous painting “The Potato Eaters” was painted by a forger sometime between 1928 and 1937. Although the original artwork has never been found, it is thought that someone managed to make a convincing enough copy that experts accepted it as real until later examinations revealed inconsistencies with Van Gogh’s known style.
Caravaggio Mystery: One of Caravaggio's earliest works, "Boy Bitten by a Lizard" (c1593), vanished after its debut exhibition in 1594, leaving no trace or documentation as to what happened to it or where it is today. Its whereabouts remain a mystery even now despite considerable effort to locate it over the years.
Hitler’s Looted Art: During World War II, Nazi Germany plundered countless works from galleries around Europe, many of which remain missing or lost in limbo today because of legal issues surrounding ownership rights and claims for restitution from the countries affected by Nazi occupation during the war years. The current whereabouts of these valuable works is one of the greatest mysteries in modern art history—one that has yet to be solved definitively despite intense investigation into this case over decades now
Renaissance Fakes: It's not only modern artists whose works have been subject to fakery—many Renaissance painters also fell victim to skilled imitators trying to capitalize on their success! Works such as those attributed to Andrea Mantegna have turned out to be outright fakes upon closer examination, prompting art historians and museums alike to become increasingly cautious about authenticating any older paintings before accepting them into their collections.
